FAQ

  • What is a Civil Ceremony?

A Civil Ceremony is conducted by an appointed civil marriage commissioner here in the province of Alberta. There can be NO religious over tones, although allowances can be made for family members to participate. Speak with your officiant to determine what can and can’t be allowed.

  • What is the cost?

There are no set fees for marriage commissioners in the province of Alberta. Each is allowed to set a rate based on what the area market will support.

  • Where can you conduct a ceremony?

Marriage commissioners are appointed throughout the province based on an areas need. If a commissioner receives a request to conduct a ceremony outside of their area, they should contact the commissioner for that region to discuss. To do otherwise is a major breach of etiquette.

If you have a specific commissioner you wish to conduct your ceremony, discuss it with them so they can take the appropriate steps. It can usually be accommodated.

  • How early do we need to book?

The earlier you can book your commissioner, the easier it is for them to guarantee your date. However booking five years in advance might be a little unrealistic. Talk to your commissioner and they will be able to best advise. If you can place a small deposit, that will help hold the date. In most cases, this deposit is refundable.

  • Will you perform same sex marriages?

All that I require is that you have the correct documents and that you are professing your love for each other. Gender is not an issue for me.
